Island Update… 2 weeks plus

We are over 2 weeks on-island now and things are starting to even out a bit. We still have a ton of things to do but at least the basics are getting taken care of .

We went ‘into town’ yesterday to get our Hawaii Driver’s Licenses. The DMV was uncrowded again and the process went pretty quickly. We have one more follow-up visit there next week and then we will be done. Our licenses should arrive in 3-4 weeks and are good for 8 years. 40 bucks and done (per license). Barbara also signed her offer letter from the her job with the County and took a drug test. She has a physical to pass and then can start work – maybe a couple of weeks from now by the time everything gets processed. That is a big deal as it takes care of our health coverage issues and gives us at least one steady paycheck to plan our budget on. Because I am consulting, there will be money coming in but it may not be as consistent and is harder to base a budget on.

We also met some friends here on the island for lunch yesterday. It was our first chance to see them since we arrived and we ate at a Mexican food place in Kapa’a called Verde. The food was actually VERY good – even with me being a Mexican Food Snob from San Diego. We will be sure to go there again in the future. Afterwards we went to the Kapa’a Farmer’s Market and picked up some oranges, carrots, and a bag of tomatoes. The total price was $7. Not bad! The Farmer’s Markets around the island are the de facto way for residents to obtain good fresh produce at reasonable prices. Once Barbara starts working full time, I will be the FM shopper of the family.

Bugs. Well we’ve been expecting an onslaught of bugs but haven’t yet been inundated by them. We each have a few mosquito bites but nothing major. Although there is one little gnat who is flying around me as I write this. He will die soon. I don’t know if it is because it is not yet summer or if the drier south shore has a few less but so far the bug issue has been a non-issue. Of course we have only been here 2 weeks so the jury is still out I guess.

The beach. Sadly, we have not spent a lot of time at the beach. We have been so preoccupied with getting our house in order and getting all the daily life stuff done that we have only visited the beaches here twice – and only briefly those 2 times. We hope to remedy that in the next few days. We also want to try out kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, hiking, snorkeling etc. – all we need is the time to get out and do it. I think it is coming soon though 🙂

End of the day at Poipu
